A cozy, fragrant classic that balances the natural sweetness of apples with deep, earthy spices. The addition of brown sugar adds a hint of molasses that makes the cider feel even richer.

Ingredients

  • 64 fl oz apple cider (preferably unfiltered/fresh)
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Mulling Spices
  • ½ cup bourbon, brandy or rum (optional)
  • Orange slices or cinnamon sticks for garnish

Instructions

Infuse the Cider

  1. Combine: Pour the 64 oz apple cider into a large pot or Dutch oven. Stir in the 2 Tbsp brown sugar and the 1 Tbsp Mulling Spices.
  2. Heat: Place over medium-high heat until it just reaches a gentle boil.
  3. Simmer: Immediately reduce the heat to low. Cover and let the cider simmer gently for 20–30 minutes. This allows the spices to fully bloom and the brown sugar to meld with the apple flavor.

The "Spike" (Optional)

  1. Add Spirits: If you are including the bourbon, brandy, or rum, stir it in once the simmering is complete. Note: Adding the alcohol at the end prevents it from boiling off, keeping the flavor and potency intact.

Serve

  1. Strain: Use a fine-mesh strainer or a slotted spoon to remove the whole mulling spices before serving.
  2. Garnish: Ladle into mugs and drop in an orange slice or a cinnamon stick for a festive look.

Notes

This recipe works beautifully in a Slow Cooker! Simply combine the cider, sugar, and spices, and set it to "Low" for 3–4 hours. It’s a great way to serve guests throughout a party without having to watch the stove.
