A simple, rustic applesauce with a sophisticated spice profile. This recipe leaves room for a bit of texture, but it can easily be smoothed out depending on your preference.
Ingredients
- 2 granny smith apples (peeled, cored, and chopped)
- 2 fuji apples (peeled, cored, and chopped)
- ¾ tsp Apple Pie Spice Blend
- ¾ cup water
- ¼ cup sugar
- ⅛ tsp salt
Instructions
Prep the Apples
- Chop: Cut your peeled and cored apples into roughly 1-inch chunks. Keeping the sizes consistent ensures they all soften at the same rate.
- Combine: In a medium saucepan, combine the apple chunks, water, sugar, salt, and the ¾ tsp Apple Pie Spice Blend.
The Simmer
- Boil & Reduce: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low.
- Cook: Cover the pot and simmer for 15–20 minutes. You’ll know they are ready when the apples are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
Mash to Taste
- Texture: Remove the pot from the heat. For Chunky Sauce: Use a potato masher or a sturdy fork to crush the apples to your desired consistency. For Smooth Sauce: Transfer to a blender or use an immersion blender until completely smooth.
- Finish: Serve warm immediately, or chill in the refrigerator for a refreshing snack.
Notes
This is great on its own, as a topping for ice cream or overnight oats or with a pork dish. You can use whatever kind of apples you have on hand but I suggest 2 tart apples like granny smith and 2 sweet apples like fuji.
